GRIMSHAW
In 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak, Grimshaw was engaged to develop a deployable collection and testing laboratory that could be quickly fabricated and delivered to high-risk/low-service locations globally. Given the high variability of projected use cases, our response was a modular catalog of container-based collection and processing components that could be relocated and reconfigured as needed. Shipping containers, while functionally ill-suited for most architectural applications, were readily available and required minimal modification to suit the demands of this effort.
The resulting D-Tec product line comprised a repeatable kit of parts accommodating functions ranging from individual collection and consultation spaces to high-capacity testing laboratories and vaccination facilities. Modules incorporated insulated envelopes, durable low-impact materials, and laboratory-specific environmental and safety provisions, with optional photovoltaic and battery systems supporting operation in areas with limited infrastructure. Shade canopies and wayfinding elements were also developed as part of the system, as illustrated in the accompanying photographs of a three-module installation at LAX.
